MadMead Brewing

In South Africa, whether you are having a party, watching sport or enjoying a braai, there is always one common denominator – everyone loves an ice-cold beer. Armed with this knowledge, Ndumiso Madlala and Josef Schmid launched MadMead Brewing, which owns and operates the Ubuntu Kraal Brewery, home of local craft beer Soweto Gold. “We had several goals in mind when we formed this business. Firstly, we wanted to create a majority black-owned brewery in a township. We wanted to create a great brand and an amazing beer. And we wanted a job that would ultimately be rewarding,” says Josef. Ndumiso adds that the Ubuntu Kraal Brewery is set to usher in a new era in the SA liquor industry, as it is producing the first regional, township-branded clear craft beer targeting the aspiring black middle class. “We have a good story and a great brand, both of which resonate with our target market,” he says. By combining their skills - Ndumiso is a qualified chemical engineer with a decade of big breweries experience and Josef is a qualified international hotelier and business executive – they have developed a product that plays in the super-premium beer space. “We currently have one of the bestselling craft beers in Gauteng, and the market continues to expand, due to the growing trends around authenticity and originality in the food and beverage space,” says Josef. Therefore, continues Ndumiso, the company needs to expand, with the plan being to grow output capacity by 400% and move to larger production facilities in Orlando, Soweto. We must also upgrade our packaging facilities and have a goal of training at least three female brew masters by 2018. Ultimately, our dream is to see Soweto Gold exported beyond our borders.”
