If a change is as good as a holiday, Salim Gani has effectively been on holiday for the past 12 years, ever since he made the change from the retail business he inherited and instead opened a quilting business focused on servicing the comforter and pillow industry. Today, says Salim, his business - AG Ismail - is still growing and has been branching out into different markets. AG Ismail is strongly focused on green initiatives, as all its products are made from PET recycled plastic bottles, and has grown enormously since he began with just a single quilting machine operating from his garage, says Salim. The beauty of his business, he explains, is that there are no restrictions on customer base, as it is able to cater for a variety of markets, including: the mattress, clothing, furniture, hardware and construction industries. Equally, he can turn out ducking systems, geyser blankets and roof and silver-lining insulation for houses and factories. Success is often about timing, Salim points out, and he believes his product has arrived on the market at the right time, in the right place and for all the right reasons. He anticipates a growing demand for his services thanks to new legislation, and claims that he would like to play a role in the new RDP housing government is putting out tenders for. While there are not many companies manufacturing insulation made from PET, he says, he knows continued success is dependent on maintaining high quality and service standards, and the continuous development of new ideas. For this reason, he is happy that his two sons have joined the business, as they offer creative ideas thanks to the perspective of a different era.
