If there’s one person who knows how to rise to an occasion, John Bowman is it. After all, his career began 20 years ago in the crane industry, and he has just been climbing higher in the business ever since. He says that Lift and Shift Equipment is a family-owned business that has been associated with cranes for nearly 50 years. The company therefore has a strong reputation in the industry, not only for quality and effectiveness, but also for keeping prices reasonable. This is achieved in part, says John, because the company manufactures its own platforms, which enables it to control costs better. He adds that there are a multitude of opportunities for his business – from government infrastructure projects to construction industry needs and from transport and logistics to tenders and sub-contractor development. He says the company’s clients include truck suppliers, municipalities, government sub-contractors, brick transporters and manufacturers, machine moving and rigging companies and construction businesses. He says that anyone needing a crane or aerial platform on a truck should be talking to Lift and Shift, as it offers everything from locally manufactured units to state-of-the-art imported ones. The business also has a national service structure, thanks to 22 service centres across both SA and its neighbouring countries. To achieve this, he wants to invest in further local manufacture of aerial platforms and also in new models through improved research and development. John believes that his young and dynamic team – which continues to take growing chunks of the market – is not being overly ambitious in its aim of being the number one crane and aerial platform supplier by 2017.
