Some businesses have what it takes to make the cut, while for others, it is a case of hair today, gone tomorrow. Gary Rom Hairdressing definitely falls into the former category, catering as it does for all ethnicities, while taking pride in being a fashion leader in design and colour technique.Owner Gary John Rom I started his career as a sales representative working for L’Oreal Professional. He soon launched his own salon - Inter Hair Design – which he rebranded as Gary Rom Hairdressing in 2003. Since then, he has opened nine new salons, all of which he has owned since inception, although he adds that he has a share incentive trust for his top employees, to ensure stability in the group at top management level.Gary says the company motto is ‘experience the difference’. He believes that the client has the right to know what they are paying for, so everything is done right in front of the customer. He adds that what sets his business apart is the ability to focus on what the rest of the industry is doing, and then use this knowledge to offer service that is different to the norm. This includes offering workshops where clients are taught to style their own hair, so they can look good every day, and a service whereby customers can have the temperatures of their hairdryers and irons checked – free of charge - to ensure that they are not damaging the client’s hair. Gary hopes to develop some 10-15 new salons within the high profile Edgars operations around the country in the near future. He also aims to continue his involvement in the soft skills training of colleges around the Gauteng area.
